Learning Outcomes of The Course Unit : 1) Students learn the properties of life, nature of science and have an idea about the unity and diversity of life.
2) Students learn the structure of atom, chemical bonds that hold molecules together, chemistry of water and its importance for life.
3) Students learn about the main groups of carbon containing compounds which are the building blocks of life.
4) Students learn the structure of cell, functions of organelles, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and theory of endosymbiosis.
5) Students learn the structure of cell membrane, functions of membrane proteins, diffusion, osmosis and transport across membrane.
6) Students have knowledge on biological reactions, flow of energy, enzymes and enzyme regulation.
7) Students learn photosynthesis, cellular respiration, fermentation, traffic between anabolism and catabolism.
8) Students learn about cell division and mitosis, sexual reproduction and meiosis, Mendelian genetics and principles of heredity.

Course Contents : Basic concepts of life sciences and scientific method. Atoms, molecules, chemical bonds and properties of biological reactions. Chemistry of water and its importance for life. Organic molecules, building blocks of life. Cell structure, functions of cellular organelles, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Cellular membrane, membrane proteins and transport across membrane. Energy, enzymes and enzyme regulation. Photosynthesis, energy harvesting pathways of metabolism, traffic between anabolism and catabolism. Principles of cell division, reproduction and heredity.

Course Aims : To make sure the students learn and understand the basic subjects, methods and concepts of life sciences, structures and functions of biological macromolecules, cell structure, functions of cellular components, application of the principles of thermodynamics to biological reactions, structure and function of enzymes, energy harvesting pathways of metabolism, photosynthesis, cell division and principles of heredity
