Course Aims
The aim of this course is to ensure that the students will be introduced to the understanding of chemical, biological and engineering aspects of biohydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metals from ores, concentrates and other resources, and the capability to develop biohydrometallurgical processes.
Course Goals

Developing a conceptual process flowsheet for the bioleaching/biooxidation of a specific ore
Understanding the relations and differences of this method to the chemical processes
Understanding industrial application of biohydrometallurgical processes

Course Contents
This module is concerned with the definition of biohydrometallurgy, past, present and future of biohydrometallurgy, importance of biohydrometallurgical processes, fundamentals of bioleaching and biooxidation processes, microorganisms used in the bioleaching and biooxidation, the identification and cultivation of microorganisms, direct and indirect oxidation mechanisms, factors affecting bioleaching/ biooxidation, industrial and lab-scale applications of biohydrometallurgical processes, bioleaching of metals such as copper and zinc from sulphidic ores, biooxidation methods of sulphidic refractory gold ores, bioleaching/biooxidation methods of oxide ores, biodesulphurisation, fundamentals of biosorption, biosorption applications.
