Course Aims
The purpose of this course is to ensure that students understand the strength and deformation characteristics of the discontinuities and their effect on the rock mass behaviour.

Understanding the properties of discontinuities and effect on rock mass behaviour
Understanding the type of rock failure due to discontinuities
Analysing the effect of discontinuities on stress distribution around excavations and the instability problems.

Course Contents
Discontinuity types and their origins, measurement of discontinuity characteristics, geometric properties of discontinuities, graphical representation of discontinuity orientation data, stength and deformation behaviour of discontinuities, effect of discontinuities on rock mass properties, effect of discontinuities on stress distribution around excavations, analysis of block stability with streographical projection of discontinuities
